Ray is a self-taught artist, born and bred in Newcastle. He works in watercolour, oil, acrylics, conte and pen and ink. He has a passion for working en plien air (out in the open) working in his favourite medium, watercolour. He is inspired by the beauty of Newcastle, Northumbria, Durham, and Yorkshire. He sells his work at Silver Street Gallery in Whitby, Matthew bank gallery in Newcastle. and Blagdon Gallery in Seaton Burn, Newcastle.
He has written and illustrated a history book, 'Quays to Newcastle', and illustrated a book of traditional north eastern folk songs entitled 'Northern Folk'.
At the age of 57 he took up a four year part time fine art course at Newcastle College and gaining a foundation degree in fine art and went on to to complete a BA (Hons) in fine art at Sunderland University.
Ray has also been a member of the Addison Rapper and Clog dance team since its inception in 1976.
